Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: Disney Screens 20 Minutes of Footage at CinemaCon
Mild spoilers ahead from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Marvel comics.
Disney screened roughly 20 minutes of footage from Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at CinemaCon on Wednesday. The footage was from the first half of the movie and establishes how Doctor Strange meets America Chavez, what the multiversal stakes are, and what’s been happening with Wanda Maximoff since the events of WandaVision.
Teenage hero America Chavez, also known as Miss America in the comics, makes her MCU debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and is portrayed by Xochitl Gomez.
In a diner scene between Strange, Wong, and America, she reveals that she’s from another universe and that she knew the Strange of that one – who, unlike in the main universe, is the Sorcerer Supreme and not Wong. America not being from our Earth is in keeping with her comic book origins.
America is being targeted by an unnamed demon who craves her power to create portals to other dimensions and travel through them. She can’t quite control her powers but they are triggered when she’s afraid.
The footage presentation began with America and her universe’s Doctor Strange battling a creature in another dimension. This Strange – named in marketing materials as “Defender Strange” – is willing to sacrifice America if it serves the greater good, which doesn’t exactly endear her to the Doctor Strange she encounters in our world.
In our universe, Doctor Strange and Wong help save America from the clutches of the giant, one-eyed, tentacled monster Gargantos, who wreaks havoc on Manhattan in his attempt to capture America. (And all this on Christine Palmer’s wedding day no less!)
Strange had seen America in what he thought was just a dream. But as America explains to him, dreams are just windows into other universes. So that battle where Defender Strange was willing to sacrifice America really happened. America is going to have to just trust that this Strange won’t do the same to her.
We then see Wanda Maximoff at home with her little boys Billy and Tommy. She’s baking in the kitchen and then tucking them into bed. And then she wakes up. It was all just a dream – or was it? As we have learned from America, dreams are just windows into the multiverse …
Doctor Strange soon arrives to ask Wanda for help. She suggests he seek out help from another Avenger but Strange says an archer or one of their insect-inspired members wouldn’t be much use when he needs someone as magically powerful as Wanda. (And, yes, Spider-Man is referenced a few times so no one has forgotten about him just Peter Parker.)
