Severance Has a Wonderfully Horrible Easter Egg on Its Keyboards
If you thought Severance couldn’t get any more twisted, you’re in for a real treat.
The work-based psychological thriller has become a huge hit with its weird premise and even weirder offices… and now it looks as though even the office keyboards are hiding a horrible secret.
Severance fan Krystina Nellis has revealed via Twitter a pretty excellent spot – that none of the keyboards in Lumon Industries’ severed floor have an “escape” key.
nerdy, extremely appropriate thing I just noticed about set design on #Severance : the keyboards have no (visible) escape key 👀 pic.twitter.com/2QcOdNNYFS

No escape… get it? The level of detail in Severance is utterly impressive and this weird little quirk is surely no coincidence.
The keyboard itself is already pretty weird. After all, it includes lots of additional keys you won’t find on a standard mechanical keyboard. And that retro aesthetic is so mundane it’s weirdly unsettling.
In fact, the entire office is just as weird, with a maze of bright hallways that seemingly lead nowhere that’s reminiscent of The Backrooms creepypasta. Comparison to The Stanley Parable seems a bit on the nose but it’s the exact same kind of weird at play in Severance.
Severance stars Adam Scott as Mark, an office worker for Lumon Industries in the Macrodata Refinement division who’s also part of the “severance” program – a group of employees who have undergone a medical procedure to separate their work memories from their non-work memories.
It’s an eerie concept, to begin with, but when layered with disturbing imagery and off-kilter plot elements Severance adds up to quite the unsettling story.
Severance has already been picked up for a second series with Adam Scott presumably returning.
IGN’s own review called Severance “a late-stage capitalism spin on the office sitcom. The chilling two-episode premiere uses a clever premise and excellent cast to set up an intriguing mystery that leaves plenty of room for the characters to evolve.”
