Andy Serkis Is Working On An Animal Farm Adaptation
Andy Serkis will direct Animal Farm – the upcoming adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel.
The project has been in the works since 2012, when Serkis first announced his adaptation.
Now, the 58-year-old actor/director will team with VFX studio Cinesite – which recently worked on No Time to Die and the animated Addams Family 2 – as well as animation studio, Aniventure.
“The challenging journey to bring this extraordinary story to the screen has been finally rewarded by the opportunity to partner with the brilliant team at Aniventure and Cinesite,” said Serkis. “Together we hope to make our version of Orwell’s ever-relevant masterpiece, emotionally powerful, humorous, and relatable for all ages. A tale not only for our times but for generations to come.”
Animal Farm was published in 1945 by George Orwell and is a satirical allegory that tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer. Ideas of a utopian society where animals take care of each other quickly go sideways when the rebellion is betrayed under the leadership of a power-hungry pig, Napoleon.
Serkis plans to use CGI characters and motion capture to bring the animals to life – a plan he’s had since as far back as 2013.
“What we’re trying to do is fairly unique,” he said. “It’s going to be entirely performance captured, so rather than photographing real animals and showing them with talking mouths, it will all be generated by the interaction between the actors playing those roles… the physicality and facial expressions of all the animals will come directly from actors’ performances.”
Although Netflix picked up Animal Farm in 2018, The Hollywood Reporter states that the online streamer is no longer attached.
Andy Serkis will direct the movie based on a script by Nick Stoller. Jonathan Cavendish, Adam Nagle, Dave Rosenbaum, and Serkis are producing while Connie Thompson will lead Cinesite’s efforts.
