Apple might be looking to shake up your Safari browsing experience thanks to the power of AI. During the recent Google antitrust trial, Apple’s Eddy Cue, the senior VP of services, mentioned that the company is seriously considering bringing AI-powered search options to its popular browser. I have suggested we could see these features rolling out within the next year as the technology continues to improve.

Perplexity, OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI platforms could come to Apple’s Safari

Cue acknowledged that current AI search isn’t quite up to Apple’s standards. Interestingly, I have also noted that Apple has already had conversations with some of the big players in the AI search space. The list includes Perplexity, OpenAI, and Anthropic. According to reports, Apple and Google are negotiating to integrate Gemini into iPhones this year. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gemini is also among the candidates to make it to Safari.

It sounds like Apple is keeping its options open and wants to be ready to switch providers if one pulls ahead of the others. Their existing partnership with OpenAI for other AI services gives them some flexibility in this regard. These comments came during Cue’s testimony about the significant amount of money – around $20 billion – that Google pays Apple to remain the default search engine in Safari. It’s noteworthy that Apple already offers a ChatGPT integration with Siri on iOS.

Safari searches declining

Interestingly, Cue mentioned that Safari searches actually declined last month for the first time in 22 years. This is a problem for Apple who gets a cut of the ad revenue from Google searches in Safari. In other words, fewer searches mean less income for Apple.

It seems Apple is actively exploring how AI could enhance the search experience in Safari. The search movement could potentially increase user engagement and, consequently, their revenue. While the exact implementation is still under wraps, the fact that they’re in talks with leading AI companies suggests that significant changes could be on the horizon for how Apple fans search the web.
