Biggest Fantasy and Sci-Fi Books of April 2022
It’s a new month, which can only mean one single thing: it’s time to look at the upcoming fantasy and sci-fi books. That’s right. April’s releases include releases from the writer of Station Eleven, a musician/actor, plus a handful of thrillers, new installments in fantasy epics, and more. Let’s take a look.
Sea of Tranquility
Emily St. John Mandel’s 2014 novel Station Eleven was a big hit that spawned a terrific HBO show. Sea of Tranquility promises a similar mixing of sci-fi and literary styles. Its mysterious story takes place across hundreds of years, with settings ranging from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a moon colony in the far future.
The Devil’s Dictionary
Like Stephen Kotler’s previous book Last Tango in Cyberspace, this one stars Lion Zorn, a man with the power to track empathy and see where the culture is going. For obvious reasons, he and others like him are useful to corporations. But when “em-trackers” start vanishing, he has to figure out what’s going on. Which brings him to an enormous national park where strange creatures have begun to appear. This one sounds like fun.
The Memory Librarian and Other Stories of Dirty Computer
From the “Afrofuturistic” world of her 2018 album Dirty Computer comes this book of short stories by Janelle Monáe and a handful of collaborators. It explores life under totalitarian rule and what it takes to start trying to break free.
The Candy House
Jennifer Egan’s 2010 novel-in-stories A Visit to the Goon Squad was a wildly creative work that spanned decades, including jumping into the future with a story written in PowerPoint. This follow-up ventures into similarly outlandish territory, ranging from a spy story to one about a device straight out of Black Mirror that lets you upload your memories and watch the memories of others.
Fevered Star (Between Earth & Sky #2)
Rebecca Roanhorse’s 2020 book Black Sun (a Hugo Awards finalist) introduced a unique fantasy world inspired by Native American cultures. This sequel continues the story, with the Crow God causing trouble, and Serapio, Xiala, and Naranpa having to deal with it.
The Bladed Faith (Vagrant Gods #1)
What’s a prince to do when his country is overthrown, his parents (and his gods) are slaughtered, and he’s finally freed after spending years in prison? He needs to become the “Vagrant,” the sword-wielding, skull mask-wearing leader of the rebellion. But that might be as easy as it seems.
Nettle & Bone
This isn’t a typical fairy tale. Marra is a princess who sees her older sister get married off to a prince. But when he turns out to be an abusive husband, she teams up with a ragtag group consisting of a disgraced knight, an unlikely fairy godmother, and a gravewitch on a quest to free her sister.
The Hunger of the Gods (Bloodsword Trilogy #2)
The first book in the Bloodsworn Trilogy, The Shadow of the Gods, introduced Vigrid, a Norse-inspired fantasy world. This sequel continues the story, with a legendary dragon god escaped from her prison and ready to lay waste to the land. Now it’s up to a band of characters to seek out a book that will let them bring back the wolf god Ulfrir and set off an all-out war for the the future of the world.
