Gargoyles Getting Rebooted as Live-Action Series by the Writer of The Nun and It

Gargoyles, the beloved animated series that originally ran on Fox in the 90s, is ready to awaken once again. THR reports that Gary Dauberman is teaming up with James Wan’s Atomic Monster to produce a live-action version of the series for Disney+.

Dauberman is set to serve as writer, producer, and showrunner for the new series, with Atomic Monster helping to produce the show. It follows in the footsteps of other live-action reboots like One Piece, though Gargoyles is distinguished by being based on an American animated series rather than anime.

An animated classic returns

The original show ran from 1994 and 1997, with its heroes being “stone by day, warriors by night. It gained a cult following thanks to its excellent writing and animation as well as its darker take on cartoon action. It also had a surprisingly large number of Star Trek alums in its cast, including Jonathan Frakes and Marina Surtis, who played Commander Riker and Deanna Troi respectively in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

We wrote that Gargoyles helped redefine cartoon villainy in a 2021 retrospective.

“The show was also able to show a surprising amount of onscreen carnage by having characters who had been turned to stone bloodlessly smashed to pieces,” we wrote at the time. “That liberty was most noticeable in the arc “City of Stone,” where Demona uses a spell to transform all the humans in Manhattan into stone from sunset to sunrise.”

For his part, Dauberman is best-known for his work on the Annabelle horror movies, which are part of Wan’s Conjuring universe. Dauberman also wrote The Nun and its sequel while serving as a co-writer on It.
