The iPhone 15 Pro is expected to stand just below the iPhone 15 Pro Max (which may end up being called the iPhone 15 Ultra) as Apple’s semi-flagship iPhone offering this year, with the company all but certain to unveil the next generation of its best iPhones in September 2023.

It’s been almost a year since the launch of the excellent iPhone 14 Pro, so we’re now fairly confident about the key iPhone 15 upgrades heading to the iPhone 15 Pro and its siblings. Indeed, the iPhone 15 rumors have been appearing in earnest of late, and in this guide, we’ve pulled together the leaks with the most credence.

For more iPhone 15 info, our iPhone 15 hub contains all you need to know about the base model iPhone 15, while our iPhone 15 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max vs iPhone 15 Pro Max comparisons detail how the iPhone 15 Pro models could stack up against other Apple iPhones.

The majority of this guide refers to the iPhone 15 Pro, but we’re expecting Apple to unveil an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max come September, too. We’ve detailed the specs for all four models in the below table:

iPhone 15 Pro release date rumors

  • September 12 looks like a locked-in launch date for the iPhone 15 Pro
  • The shipping date will come a week or so later

The iPhone 15 Pro is highly likely to launch on September 12, which is when the next Apple event, titled “Wonderlust”, is taking place. Apple hasn’t actually confirmed that iPhones will be launched at this event, but as September is the long-established launch month for new iPhones, we can place a very secure bet that we’ll see the iPhone 15 line debuted on that day. Take a look at our guide on how to watch the Apple September event

Pre-orders for Apple’s new iPhones (and therefore the iPhone 15 Pro) will likely begin a few days later on Friday, September 15, with shipping dates following another week later on Friday, September 22.

Some rumors had previously hinted that the iPhone 15 Pro Max could face worrying delays, owing to production hiccups surrounding its complex camera components. However, the latest intelligence suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro Max might not be delayed, after all. Irritatingly, the rumors are split on this, so we’ve dived into them to assess whether the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be delayed or not

Taking that all into account, we reckon now is the worst time to buy a new iPhone; you should wait for the IPhone 15 lineup to be fully revealed.

iPhone 15 Pro price predictions

The iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 / £1,099 / AU$1,749 (Image credit: Future | Alex Walker-Todd)

There’s mixed news about the new phone’s price, as early rumors suggest the iPhone 15 Pro could be even more expensive than the iPhone 14 Pro, but a more recent report suggests iPhone 15 Pro pricing will stay the same. Here’s how the iPhone 14 Pro was priced at launch:

  • 128GB: $999 / £1,099 / AU$1,749
  • 256GB: $1099 / £1,209 / AU$1,899
  • 512GB: $1,299 / £1,429 / AU$2,249
  • 1TB: $1,499 / £1,649 / AU$2,599

According to a Weibo source and seasoned Apple analyst Jeff Pu, Apple will hike the price of the iPhone 15 Pro to boost the appeal of the cheaper iPhone 15, whose predecessor hasn’t been selling as well as expected.

That prediction fits with the assessment offered by another Apple analyst, Dan Ives, who suggests that every phone in the iPhone 15 line could cost more than their iPhone 14 equivalents, owing to increased production costs on Apple’s part. Reputable journalist and leaker Mark Gurman has also pointed to a price rise for the iPhone 15 line.

We could therefore conceivably see the iPhone 15 Pro start at $1,099 / £1,199 / AU$1,899 for the 128GB model, though it’s also worth noting that Apple may opt to forgo 128GB storage options with the iPhone 15 lineup, as other manufacturers have done with their respective 2023 flagships. In fact, the company will reportedly offer an unprecedented 2TB storage option for the iPhone 15 Pro, too. That said, another source suggests storage will stay the same, and as noted once source suggests pricing will too.

For our money, then, we’d bet that the iPhone 15 Pro will start at around $1,199 / £1,209 / AU$1,899 for the 256GB storage option, rising to anything as high as $1,799 / £1,949 / AU$2,999 for the rumored 2TB option.

iPhone 15 Pro colors

The iPhone 14 Pro in four shades

Apple will likely offer a variety of iPhone 15 colors at launch, though we expect the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to be available in a different selection of shades to the standard iPhone 15. Going by the latest rumors, we’re expecting four different iPhone 15 Pro color options in total:

  • Dark red
  • Dark blue
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Graphite, Space Gray, or Space Black

Elsewhere on the colors front, rumors suggest that every iPhone 15 model will come with a color-matched braided USB-C cable. The use of braiding should make these cables more durable to the rigors of long-term use, as well as better retain their colors. You can read more about the potential benefits of Apple’s transition to USB-C on the iPhone 15 Pro, specifically, further down this article.

iPhone 15 Pro design

  • Thinner bezels, titanium sides rumored
  • Solid-state buttons were initially touted, but no longer expected
  • Same dimensions as iPhone 14 Pro, but lighter frame

On the design front, we expect the iPhone 15 Pro to be similar in size to its predecessor – that’s 147.5 x 71.5 x 7.85mm – but it could still look like a very different device.

We’ve heard from multiple sources, for instance, that the iPhone 15 Pro could get titanium sides, which would make it stronger and lighter than the stainless steel-framed iPhones currently available. Specifically, the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to weigh just 191g, compared to the 206g of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to have rounded rear edges, too, in contrast to the iPhone 14 Pro’s sharp-angled sides; leaked iPhone 15 Pro renders showing off these curved sides have since emerged, adding credence to the rumor.

We’ve also heard that the iPhone 15 Pro will be getting thinner bezels than the iPhone 14 Pro – the iPhone 15 Pro’s bezels might just be 1.5mm thick, making them 0.7mm thinner than the 2.2mm thick bezels on the iPhone 14 Pro.

You can take a look at what the iPhone 15 Pro might look like in the video below, courtesy of MacRumors, which shows off leaked iPhone 15 mockups for all four models. You can see the rounded edges and the USB-C port that we’ve been hearing about.

The iPhone 15 Pro will almost certainly get a new Action button, similar to what the Apple Watch Ultra has, in place of a mute switch. You can see this in some of the renders above, and an iOS 17 beta has revealed what this Action Button might be capable of. We have also selected five things we want to see from the iPhone 15 Pro Action button.

It’s also worth noting that Apple may be preparing to move to eSIM in countries outside the US for the iPhone 15 Pro, with eSIMs reportedly coming to the next generation of Apple’s best iPhones in France. This is big news for all prospective iPhone 15 Pro buyers outside of the US. Apple typically sells the same iPhone models across most of Europe, meaning SIM card-less iPhone 15 Pros could also be coming to the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and many other countries.

iPhone 15 Pro USB-C

One big change touted for the iPhone 15 Pro, and indeed all iPhone 15 models, is expected to come in the form of a USB-C charging port. The EU has told Apple that it has to add USB-C charging ports to iPhones by 2024, but multiple leaks have suggested that Apple will be adopting the charging standard in 2023 with the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

But given there are a lot of people with Lightning-based accessories, we reckon Apple needs to make the transition to USC-C with the iPhone 15 Pro as painless as possible

We’ve also heard that the iPhone 15 Pro’s Thunderbolt 3 version of USB-C will make the device compatible with 4K monitors, meaning you’ll be able to display certain types of content on a separate screen – as you can with the best iPads.

iPhone 15 Pro cameras

A closeup on the iPhone 14 Pro’s triple camera system (Image credit: Apple)
  • Will likely stick with the same triple-lens setup as the iPhone 14 Pro
  • Sensors may be improved

On the subject of iPhone 15 cameras, the iPhone 15 Pro isn’t expected to stray too far from its predecessor’s (admittedly excellent) triple-sensor setup. The iPhone 14 Pro boasts the following three lenses:  48MP wide (24mm f/2.8), and a 12MP telephoto (77mm f/2.8).

According to analyst house TrendForce, the iPhone 15 lineup’s camera upgrades could be the “star of the show” at the Apple September event. This would indicate that new sensors and camera capabilities are set to feature.

But from the rumors so far, a touted 6x optical zoom telephoto camera will be the reserve of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, rather than both Pro models. So people who love getting close to their photo subjects may be ushered towards the biggest and most expensive iPhone.

The main difference between the iPhone 15 Pro’s cameras and the iPhone 14 Pro’s, then, will probably be the quality of sensors used. According to leaks, the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to sport new Sony-produced sensors that capture more light.

iPhone 15 Pro features

(Image credit: Future | Alex Walker-Todd)
  • Will reportedly use the super-fast A17 Bionic
  • Potentially more RAM
  • AI could feature prominently

The iPhone 14 Pro rocks the latest version of Apple’s silicon – the A16 Bionic – which makes it one of the fastest phones (if not the fastest phone) money can buy right now. And yet, the iPhone 15 Pro will be even faster.

Apple’s next Pro-level iPhone is reportedly in line for an A17 Bionic chipset, which is rumored to be more efficient than the A16 Bionic. In fact, Chinese outlet DCInside reports that the A17 Bionic will boast a 20% more powerful CPU than its predecessor, meaning the iPhone 15 Pro should enjoy sizable speed gains over the iPhone 14 Pro.

Crunching the numbers, DCInside claims that the A17 Bionic earns a single-core score of 3019 and a multi-core score of 7860 on Geekbench 6, where the A16 Bionic scores 2504 and 6314, respectively. This isn’t the only benchmark leak we’ve seen for the iPhone 15 Pro either.

Naturally, we’d suggest taking these rumored figures with a hefty pinch of salt, but it’s exciting to think that the iPhone 15 Pro might sport benchmark scores to rival Apple’s best MacBooks.

It could also be significantly more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset powering the best Android phones, as while that’s made on a 4nm process, the A17 Bionic will reportedly be made on a 3nm process, which means far more transistors can be included, likely leading to better performance and efficiency.

As for other performance specs, the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to get 8GB RAM, where the current iPhone 14 Pro has 6GB RAM. This has been backed up by another leak as well, as well as by a TrendForce report into the iPhone 15 line.

All that said, another leak points to the A17 Bionic being something of a middling upgrade, with one additional GPU core and a clock speed of 3.70GHz rather than 3.46GHz, but no major sounding changes. Worse, the same source claims the iPhone 15 Pro will come with 6GB of RAM, just like last year. So it’s a little unclear just how powerful this phone will actually be.

Additionally, every iPhone 15 will reportedly feature an upgraded Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip to support the functionality of Apple’s Vision Pro headset. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s U1 chip – currently built on a 16nm process – will be replaced by newer silicon, founded on a significantly more compact 7nm process; with the intention of improving performance, while also reducing power consumption.

And lastly on the features front, the iPhone 15 line is expected to play host to Apple’s next big developments in AI. Specifically, a next-generation iOS Health app could use AI to make tailored lifestyle recommendations based on your heart rate, sleep, diet, and breathing data – something existing iPhones aren’t able to do.

iPhone 15 Pro battery and charging

  • Bigger batteries tipped
  • Faster charging via USB-C

Judging by Apple’s history when it comes to updating (or rather, not updating) battery sizes with each iPhone iteration, we were expecting the iPhone 15 Pro to boast a similarly-sized power pack to the iPhone 14 Pro (3,200mAh), however recent rumors suggest that the entire iPhone 15 lineup will feature significantly larger batteries than their predecessors.

The iPhone 15 Pro, specifically, will reportedly feature a 14% larger battery than the iPhone 14 Pro, taking its capacity up to 3,650mAh. In theory, then, it’ll boast better battery life. There’s also a switch in battery technology in the pipeline, apparently.

Another rumor has suggested that Apple is working on a reverse wireless charging feature for the iPhone 15 line, and if true, the iPhone 15 Pro will be able to wirelessly charge other Apple gadgets, where the iPhone 14 Pro can’t.

It’s also worth reiterating here that the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to get a USB-C port, so you probably won’t be able to use your older Apple Lightning cable to juice it up. This version of USB-C is rumored to support the USB 3.0 standard, too – where the iPhone 15 will reportedly stick with its predecessor’s USB 2.0 standard – so the iPhone 15 Pro could get faster file transfer speeds than its vanilla sibling (according to USBMakers, the former could offer 90% faster speeds).

More generally, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had stated that Apple’s proprietary USB-C chargers will offer faster iPhone 15 charging speeds than accessories produced by other manufacturers. The EU recently warned Apple against making such a move, owing to its desire to keep the charging playing field level, but with other rumors claiming that at least some of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 devices will support charging up to 35W (an upgrade made possible by the switch to USB-C), we think the company will indeed make its own USB-C chargers better than the rest.

At present, the standard iPhone 14 is limited to 20W charging, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is capped at 27W. The latter takes around two hours to recharge to full capacity, so we’ll gratefully accept any improvements on that figure for the iPhone 15 Pro.

iPhone 15 Pro display

  • Expected to retain 6.1-inch Super XDR OLED screen

When it comes to iPhone 15 screen sizes and displays, we’re expecting the iPhone 15 Pro to retain its predecessor’s 6.1-inch Super XDR OLED screen and Dynamic Island digital cutout.

The latter is expected to make its way onto the vanilla iPhone 15, too, though the next iteration of the Dynamic Island won’t necessarily be identical to that which is used on the iPhone 14 line. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro’s proximity sensor will be integrated inside the ‌Dynamic Island itself, rather than positioned separately (as on the iPhone 14 Pro).

Potential evidence for the iPhone 15 Pro’s familiar display credentials has emerged, too, with leaked videos showing the front glass for reportedly three iPhone 15 models. They all include Dynamic Islands along with slightly curved bezels, with the Pro models having smaller bezels than the standard ones.

One reason to skip the iPhone 15 Pro altogether could be down to the rumor that the iPhone 16 may come with a new MLA AMOLED display that could make for a brighter screen.

iPhone 15 Pro outlook

More iPhone 15 articles

A rumored curved design, a titanium chassis and USB-C connectivity could all add up to make the iPhone 15 Pro a solid upgrade over its predecessor. But it’s arguably not set to be a generational shift over the iPhone 14 Pro.

Yet for people on older iPhones, the iPhone 15 Pro could be a smartphone to watch, particularly if the size and cost of the iPhone 15 Pro Max might not appeal.
