Finally, after an 18 month wait, Invincible season 2’s release date has been unveiled. The hugely successful R-rated animated superhero series returns to our screens in November 2023, and we couldn’t be more excited.

In our opinion, Invincible is definitely one of the best Prime Video shows of all-time. The wait for its sophomore year has been excruciating, but we’re nonetheless pleased that Mark and company will be back with us sooner rather than later. In fact, its return is a big reason why we’re subscribing to Prime Video later this year instead of Netflix.

The second season’s launch date announcement isn’t the only big news to be revealed about the Prime Video show recently. A new teaser trailer, character details, and the series’ future have all been discussed by its cast and crew, and we’ve rounded it up all for you to read easily below. Oh, and there’s a prequel episode, centered around Atom Eve, already available to stream right now.

Major spoilers follow for Invincible season 1. Potential spoilers for its sequel season and Robert Kirkman/Ryan Ottley/Cory Walker’s graphic novels are also discussed.

Invincible season 2 will debut on Prime Video on Friday, November 3. That official reveal comes five months after Amazon revealed it would arrive in late 2023.

Fans shouldn’t expect the whole season to drop before the end of the year, though. The first four episodes will be released weekly until Friday, December 1. Season 2 will go on hiatus (albeit briefly) ahead of its final four entries airing in early 2024.

Speaking to Collider, Kirkman revealed why Invincible season 2 – and its sequel, which we’ll elaborate on later – have taken so long to develop: the size of its cast (more on this shortly), the Covid-19 pandemic, and pushing the boundaries of its animation.

“We’re an hour long animated show, which is very unusual,” he added. “But we have so many characters and so many settings, even in just one episode that we’re really kind of pushing the limits of what can be done in animation. So it takes a long time to make it. But it has also taken a long time to learn how to do it and figure it out because we’re doing a lot of things that you don’t necessarily do in animation.”

Invincible seasons 2 and 3 were greenlit in April 2021, so the wait for both entries has been a lengthy one. However, as showrunner Simon Racioppa told TechRadar in March 2022, the Invincible crew have been “working hard” on them for a long time.

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait any longer for new Invincible episodes. A prequel installment, which takes viewers inside Atom Eve’s origins story, is available to watch on Prime Video. Watch the trailer below first, if you like, or load up Amazon’s main streamer to get your fill.

Invincible season 2 trailer

Invincible season 2’s official teaser debuted at Comic-Con 2023 on July 22. There’s little in the way of new footage for us to pour over – hey, Amazon has to preserve most of the mystery – but there’s enough in the trailer to glean what might go down in the series’ next season.

On initial viewing, the teaser appears to suggest that Mark Grayson (aka Invincible) has turned to the dark side. Voice clips from Debbie Grayson and Cecil Stedman, in particular, tease as much, but Invincible fans know this isn’t the case at all. They’re simply bait and switch tactics to keep casual fans on their toes, so don’t expect Mark to become a bad guy.

Elsewhere, we see Invincible and the revived Immortal duke it out, snippets of Mark looking shocked or plagued by visions of the forthcoming Viltrumite threat, and plenty of returning faces from season 1. That includes Omni-Man, i.e. Mark’s father, who may not have a huge role in season 2, but his presence will loom large over proceedings.

Potential cast spoilers follow.

Here’s the full Invincible season 2 cast, including the characters who they’re playing (the ones revealed so far, anyway)

  • Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson/Invincible
  • J.K. Simmons as Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man
  • Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson
  • Zazie Beetz as Amber Bennett
  • Gillian Jacobs as Samantha Eve Wilkins/Atom Eve
  • Andrew Rannells as William Clockwell
  • Walton Goggins as Cecil Stedman
  • Jason Mantzoukas as Rex Sloan/Rex Splode
  • Ross Marquand as Rudy Conners, Kursk and Bi-Plane
  • Mark Hamill as Art Rosenbaum
  • Khary Payton as Markus Grimshaw/Black Samson
  • Malese Jow as Kate Cha/Dupli-Kate
  • Grey Griffin as Shrinking Rae and Amanda (Monster Girl’s human form)
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Monster Girl/the Mauler Twins
  • Seth Rogen as Allen the Alien
  • Mahershala Ali as Titan
  • Chris Diamantopoulos as Doc Seismic
  • Tatiana Maslany as Queen Lizard
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan as TBA
  • Sterling K Brown as Angstrom Levy
  • Peter Cullen as Thaddeus

Everyone up to and including Maheshala Ali’s Titan were already confirmed to be back. Doc Seismic’s return was confirmed in the second season 2 teaser, while Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) voiced Queen Lizard in the Atom Eve prequel episode. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the latest Walking Dead actor to join Invincible’s ranks, has also been cast in an undisclosed role.

It’s the final two characters who are the most important where season 2 is concerned, though. First, Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, The People v O.J. Simpson) will voice Angstrom Levy, one of Invincible’s arch nemeses (per ComicBook.com). We’ll explain more about him in our spoiler-filled plot section.

Meanwhile, iconic Transformers voice actor Peter Cullen will reportedly play Thaddeus, the only other individual to betray the Viltrumite Empire. He’s the character who founded the Coalition of Planets in the comics, which Allen the Alien (Invincible’s new bestie) works for.

Other potential returnees may include Fred Tatasciore (Kill Cannon), Clancy Brown (Damien Darkblood), Jeffrey Donovan (Machine Head), Ezra Miller (D.A. Sinclair), and Michael Dorn (Battle Beast and Thokk). Invincible‘s original creator Robert Kirkman, who also works on the TV adaptation, has hinted at some of their returns, but we’re unsure who’ll be back.

A more prominent season 1 voice actor who could return, but hasn’t yet been confirmed, is Zachary Quinto. He voiced Robot in season 1, i.e. the artificial host body of Rudy Conners, an individual whose genetic defects initially meant he was unable to live outside of his saline tank.

With Rudy’s consciousness being transferred into his new clone body in episode 7, Ross Marquand took over vocal duties for Rudy, so we don’t know if Quinto will be back. Robot plays a huge role in the comic series, but we don’t know if events involving him will be part of Invincible season 2 or a future installment.

Finally, a bunch of other cast members were revealed as part of season 2’s latest teaser trailer. We don’t know who they’re voicing, but three of them will be playing Giant, Bulletproof, and Shapesmith, based on these season 2 art reveals (thanks to Reddit for the catch). You can see who else will feature in Invincible‘s next season via the list below:

  • Micah Aliling
  • Eric Bauza
  • Chloe Bennet
  • Cleveland Berto
  • Lincoln Bodin
  • Camden Coley
  • Cliff Curtis

  • Calista Flockhart
  • Josh Keaton
  • Phil Lamaar
  • Luke MacFarlane
  • Scoot McNairy
  • Jay Pharoah
  • Ella Purnell
  • Tim Robinson
  • Ben Schwartz
  • Rhea Seehorn

Invincible season 2 plot

The Immortal prepares to throw a punch at Mark Grayson in Invincible season 2

Major spoilers follow for Invincible season 1 and the graphic novels.

Invincible season 2 could explore various storylines from the comics, but it’s likely to draw inspiration from issue 24 onwards. That’s based on Invincible‘s season 1 finale, plus how the overarching narrative and side stories play out in the graphic novels.

First, let’s discuss the season 1 finale. Omni-Man was supposed to conquer Earth for the Viltrumite Empire but, when he realized that he couldn’t kill Mark and enslave humanity for his fellow extraterrestrial conquerors, he tearfully headed out into space for an unknown destination.

Season 2 should pick up this plot thread. Mark will be tasked with keeping Earth safe from the forthcoming Viltrumite invasion and help the Coalition of Planets stop the former from carrying out their universe-wide expansion.

Mark already knows that an invasion fleet is on its way thanks to Allen and, with the latter having a more prominent role in the comics moving forward, we can expect the duo’s bromance and power levels to grow in the TV show, too.

We should also find out where Omni-Man/Nolan has gone. In the comics, Nolan invades another planet, which he hopes will act as recompense – with the Viltrumite Empire – for deserting his posting on Earth. There’s a lot more for the animated series to cover regarding Mark and Nolan’s relationship, which is explored extensively in the source material. We could write multiple paragraphs on this compelling father-son bond so, for now, let’s say we’ll definitely see some of Simmons’ Nolan next season.

Season 1’s final episode also teased other potential season 2 subplots.

We should see more of the Sequids storyline, which wasn’t officially concluded. The spaceman who was left behind on Mars is now controlled by the Sequids, which could spell bad news for Earth if this parasitic race charts a course for the blue planet.

Additionally, we know that a Martian has infiltrated Earth after he traded places with one of the human astronauts, although this is likely to be Shapesmith, based on the Reddit character art we mentioned earlier. He’s a superhero in the comics who also joins the Guardians of the Globe, so expect to see Mark net some more allies in season 2. Zandale Randolph’s Bulletproof, another character teased via Reddit, is another of those heroic superpowered individuals, but we’ll refrain from spoiling his important role in the graphic novels here.

Titan and Battle Beast’s stories may be fleshed out in more detail, too. The last time we saw them, they’d taken over Machine Head’s criminal organization and teleported away from Earth respectively. Their tales continue in the comics, and Kirkman has already alluded to fan favorite Battle Beast getting more screen time. The Flaxans also look like they’ll return, despite Omni-Man’s rampage across their home planet in the show’s second episode.

One interesting piece of news concerns story elements that didn’t make it into Invincible’s comic book run. Speaking to Beyond the Trailer, Kirkman revealed he hoped to include storylines in the show that he couldn’t work into the graphic novels. One subplot concerns Damien Darkblood, who was banished back to Hell by Cecil Stedman in episode 4. Damien was briefly mentioned in Atom Eve’s prequel episodes, but it’s unclear if this other storyline will be part of season 2.

Meanwhile, Kirkman has revealed more about Invincible season 2’s plot and the inclusion of Mark’s biggest nemesis – Angstrom Levy.

Little is revealed about his backstory in the source material, but Levy’s ability to – without detailing too much – traverse time and space makes him a formidable and recurring foe for Mark to deal with.

Speaking during a 2020 Skybound Xpo panel, Kirkman said: “He [Levy] really shakes things up. If you’re familiar with the comics and you’ve watched the TV show, you’ll get a sense of where we’re going with the second season, especially if you think really hard about how we adapted the story in the first season.”

Elaborating on how Levy factors into season 2 (per Inverse), Kirkham teased: “Some large or small aspect of season 2 focuses on the Angstrom Levy character. He’ll be a new villain that comes into the series. And if you’ve read the comics, you’re aware of who he is and what his deal is. He’s a villain that has access to multiple dimensions, and so it’s another one of those dang multiverse things. We do things in a different way [than the comics], so there’s a little bit of a unique flavor to what we’re doing.”

Additionally, based on the impending arrivals of Levy and the Viltrumite fleet, Invincible’s next instalment will enter more cosmic territory. Expect stranger worlds, weirder characters, and a multiverse-spanning plot to feature more heavily next time around. Kirkman has also teased there would be some “crazy stuff coming”, while Jason Mantzoukas revealed that he can’t wait for season 2 to “introduce more villains… like Thragg” and more of the comic series’ intergalactic elements.

What does the future hold for the Invincible franchise?

First, we know more seasons are coming, with a third installment greenlit alongside Invincible season 2. According to the official Invincible Twitter account, voice work has been completed for season 3, so the wait between this season and the next shouldn’t be as long as the gap between seasons 1 and 2.

In total, there are 144 Invincible comic issues, spanning 20 years of Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ottley’s careers. The TV adaptation altered the order of certain plot points in its first season, but only covered the first 23 issues. If a similar trajectory is maintained for future seasons, Invincible might end around the season 7 or 8 mark.

Kirkman has said there could be more or less than that, telling ScreenRant there’s a “rough roadmap for where things from the comics will fall”. Additionally, he told Inverse that he “could see it going for five… seven… even 10 years. Maybe we run out of comic books and… we do 100 seasons.”

Speaking of when we should expect the show’s third entry to arrive, Kirkham told Collider: “I can’t say. Far enough along that there won’t be a similar gap between Season 2 and Season 3. This is the pain. This area right now is the pain for Invincible fans. So once we’re through this, once season 2 comes out, hopefully, it should be smooth sailing from there on. There won’t be these big, large gaps, theoretically.”

Invincible‘s renewal post-season 3 depends on whether it continues to draw in audiences in its next two seasons – or will it? Speaking to Collider, Seth Rogen seemed to suggest Invincible will continue after season 3. However, Amazon Studios exclusively told TechRadar that “nothing official has been announced”, so we’re unsure if we’ll get a fourth season and more.

On the off-chance that Invincible ends after three seasons, there’s plenty more to be excited about from a franchise standpoint. Omni-Man is set to be a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Games’ iconic (and rebooted) R-rated videogame series. Atom Eve is also getting her own standalone game, too, sometime in the future. Add in a live-action Invincible film, which is still being worked on despite languishing in development hell for years, and fans of the acclaimed graphic novels will have much more to enjoy outside of the TV series soon enough.
