Kevin Smith Hopes SAG-AFTRA Strikers ‘Crush Their Overlords’

Clerks director Kevin Smith hopes the actors currently striking as part of the Screen Actors Guild: American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) will “crush their overlords”.

As reported by Deadline, Smith addressed the ongoing strikes during a Comic-Con panel for Masters of the Universe: Revolution. “Thanks to the SAG strike, I’m the most famous person here,” he joked, drawing attention to the lack of film and TV stars that Comic-Con usually attracts.

“Let’s give it up for unions. We hope that they crush their overlords,” he said, adding a “like Netflix” as a quip poking fun at the streaming service (and Mattel) owning the show he was there to promote.

SAG-AFTRA announced it would join the Writers Guild of America in striking on July 13 after Hollywood studios and streaming companies were “unwilling to offer a fair deal on the key issues” members were concerned about. The strike effectively brings Hollywood to a standstill, with production on the likes of Star Wars: Andor and Deadpool 3 shutting down as a result.

Some projects will continue thanks to certain workarounds though. Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon’s Season 2 will continue as normal due to its cast being mainly comprised of British actors, meaning they aren’t part of SAG-AFTRA but instead the UK union Equity. Dune prequel series The Sisterhood is in a similar boat.
