Alan Arkin, Star of Little Miss Sunshine, Dies at 89

Alan Arkin, the Oscar-winning star of Little Miss Sunshine, has died aged 89.

Arkin was known for his roles in Catch-22, Edward Scissorhands, Grosse Point Blank, and Argo, and had a body of work spanning seven decades. He passed away on June 29 at his home in Carlsbad, California.

“Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man,” said Arkin’s sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony in a joint statement to People. “A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”

Arkin made his feature film debut in 1957 in a small role in the musical film Calypso Heat Wave. He went on to secure roles across film, television, and even as a Broadway actor, making his theater debut in From the Second City at the Royale Theatre in 1961. Arkin also played the inventor of the jetpack in the 1991 film, The Rocketeer.

“Did ANYONE have the range Alan Arkin had?” said Patton Oswald on Twitter. “Hilarious, sinister, insane, tragic. No mood he couldn’t live in. RIP.”

He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Little Miss Sunshine and followed this up with a nomination for his role in Ben Affleck’s Argo. Earlier in his career, he was nominated for The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming in 1967 and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter in 1969. Incredibly, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming was his first credited film role.

More recently, Arkin received back-to-back Emmy nominations for his performance in the Netflix show, The Kominsky Method. Arkin had also stepped behind the camera. In 1969, he made his directorial debut with the 12-minute Oscar-nominated short People Soup, starring his sons, Adam and Matthew.

Arkin is survived by his three sons, Adam, Matthew, and Anthony, as well as his third wife, Suzanne.
