What’s the Best Star Wars Movie or Show? IGN’s Readers Have Spoken

In honor of Star Wars Celebration 2023, we thought now would be the perfect time to ask you which of the many Star Wars movies and shows is the greatest of them all. Everything that’s been released so far was in the running, from the Original Trilogy up through current streaming series like The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

So after thousands and thousands of match-ups like The Empire Strikes Back vs. The Last Jedi and The Clone Wars vs. The Mandalorian, the Star Wars project you love best has been decided. What was the winner? Drum roll, please…

The Empire Strikes Back takes the crown, in a pretty decisive victory. This was the only movie or show on the list that won more than 90% of its Face-Off matches. And it shouldn’t come as any great surprise. Episode V is still widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, as well as topping many fans’ personal ranking lists for the Star Wars franchise.

The Original Trilogy definitely dominated this Face-Off, with A New Hope and Return of the Jedi clocking in at #2 and #3, respectively. But Episode VI was followed close behind by The Mandalorian, which is the first TV series and the first Disney-era Star Wars project to rank. At a 76.8% win percentage, it’s clear The Mandalorian still has plenty of fans.

Also representing the Disney Star Wars era were Rogue One and Andor, followed by Revenge of the Sith at #7 (the only Prequel to crack the top ten). Star Wars: The Clone Wars fell just a tenth of a percentage point behind Episode III, making it the highest-ranked animated series in this Face-Off.

On the other end of the spectrum, the early Star Wars TV spinoffs didn’t fare so well. The bottom three consists of The Star Wars Holiday Special at 16%, Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO at 15.4% and the Ewoks animated series at an abysmal 10.4%. These projects may have their place in the annals of Star Wars history, but that doesn’t mean they’re particularly well-liked.

Are you wondering where your favorite Star Wars movie or series landed, like The Last Jedi or Star Wars Rebels? For all the rankings, you can check out the full list of where all 28 movies and series that competed in the Face-Off ended up.

There’s plenty more Star Wars content to come in the eyars ahead. Star Wars Celebration broiught with it the first trailer for Star Wars: Ahsoka, as well as news of a new Star Wars movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey and another from The Mandalorian’s Dave Filoni. Plus, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is still actively being worked on.
